Collaborative Care for Children and Adolescents

Children have so much to offer to the world - we believe in the power that they hold, and know that they will mold future generations to come.

Virginia Mental Health Access Program (VMAP) is a statewide mental health access program designed to help health care providers take better care of children and adolescents with mental health conditions by increasing access to child psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and care navigators.

VMAP has child and adolescent psychiatrists available during business hours to provide consultations to PCPs in Virginia. VMAP can provide consultations for individuals ages 0-21 years. To initiate a consult with a child and adolescent psychiatrist, please call 1-888-371-VMAP (8627) or complete the form below (PCPs only).

Virginia children cannot access the mental health services they need.

We suffer from a severe shortage of child psychiatrists. Over half the counties do not even have one child/adolescent mental health professional.

1 in 5 children has a diagnosable mental disorder and 1 in 10 suffers from a serious mental health problem. The majority of these children have nowhere to go for help.

Virginia ranks 41st in the nation for its mental health workforce availability, according to the 2020 State of Mental Health in America report.

Provide more children with mental health services by expanding the existing workforce.

The VMAP will do this by giving primary care providers the training and tools they need to serve children and adolescents with mental health needs.

This program will ensure that more children have access to providers who are better able to screen, diagnose, manage and treat mental health.

With the severe shortage of these services, we must make them available in places where children already access health care.
